BREAKING NEWS: Colorado State University (CSU) has fired head football coach Jay Norvell following a disappointing 31-19 loss to Hawaii on Saturday, dropping the Rams to a troubling 2-5 record this season. Director of athletics John Weber announced the decision during a press conference on Monday, emphasizing the need for a new leadership direction as CSU prepares for a pivotal match against Wyoming this Saturday.

Weber stated, “Today is about moving forward,” highlighting the urgency for change after Norvell’s 18-26 tenure over three and a half years. The Rams, struggling in the Mountain West Conference at 1-2, faced halted progress at a critical juncture as they aim to ascend into the Pac-12.

In a strategic move, defensive coordinator Tyson Summers has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. This comes as the team looks for a fresh start amidst a challenging season. Summers, who joined CSU last December, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to lead and for the opportunity to serve these young men.”

Summers’ new role begins immediately, with a focus on the upcoming rivalry game against Wyoming. Following that, CSU will enjoy a bye week before hosting UNLV on November 8. “It’s an opportunity for us to get coach Summers focused on what the future holds for Colorado State,” Weber noted, emphasizing the need for strategic preparation and recruitment during the bye week.

Reflecting on the recent struggles, Weber remarked, “As we went through the season, we had starts and stops and we struggled against Hawaii to find our identity.” The decision to part ways with Norvell comes as the university aims to reinvigorate the program and build momentum moving forward.

Summers retains his duties as defensive play caller while handing over offensive responsibilities to tight ends coach Grant Chestnut. With five games left in the season, Summers remains optimistic about the potential for a turnaround, stating, “We’ve got an opportunity to really do something special.”

As CSU embarks on this new chapter, Weber confirmed that a national search for a permanent head coach will commence immediately, partnering with a prestigious search firm to identify the right candidate to lead the program.

CSU fans and players alike are hopeful for a revitalized team spirit under Summers’ interim leadership as they prepare for their next challenge.
