Delaware Woman Jailed for Drug Trafficking After Traffic Stop

UPDATE: A Delaware woman has been sentenced to jail on drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop on Interstate 476 in Towamencin Township. Sherena Cooper, 41, from Wilmington, received a 7-to-23-month sentence in Montgomery County Court after pleading guilty to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance related to a traffic incident from June 3, 2024.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 PM when state police noticed Cooper driving a Mercedes Benz E350 at speeds reaching 85 mph in a 55 mph zone. Officers initiated a traffic stop due to the excessive speed, according to the arrest affidavit filed by state police Trooper Andrew Korrubin.

Upon approaching the vehicle, Trooper Korrubin observed marijuana in plain view and detected a strong smell of the substance. Cooper consented to a search of her vehicle, leading to the seizure of approximately quarter pound of methamphetamine and two ounces of marijuana. Subsequent field tests confirmed the presence of both drugs.

During the sentencing, letters of support from Cooper’s friends highlighted her character, portraying her as a devoted family member and a church-going woman committed to turning her life around. Despite these affirmations, additional charges of possession of controlled substances and several traffic citations were dismissed at the time of sentencing.

Judge Risa Vetri Ferman indicated that Cooper could be eligible for the jail’s work release program, allowing her potential early release pending verification of her employment status. Under current regulations, the work release program is treated similarly to house arrest.

This case sheds light on ongoing issues surrounding drug trafficking and public safety on highways, as authorities continue to combat substance abuse and its associated risks. The implications of Cooper’s case resonate throughout the community, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and prevention strategies.

As this situation develops, the community watches closely for updates, particularly regarding Cooper’s potential participation in the work release program. Stay tuned for more information on this pressing matter.
