UPDATE: A Detroit man, Glenn Stevens, is speaking out just days after surviving a brutal attack that claimed his brother’s life outside Chita’s Nefertiti Bar on January 4, 2023. In a heart-wrenching account, Stevens recounted the violence that erupted as he and his brother were celebrating a recent job promotion.
Glenn Stevens, who was stabbed 14 times, recently left the hospital and attended his brother Jalen Stevens’ funeral. “When I first woke up in the hospital, I asked where he was,” he shared, revealing the deep bond they shared.
The violent incident unfolded as the brothers exited the bar. Glenn Stevens described the moment that ignited the chaos: “As soon as I walked out the door, some guy pushed me. I didn’t bump him. I don’t know who he is.” The altercation escalated quickly when a woman sprayed mace, leading to a brutal assault on both brothers.
Authorities confirmed that Michael Alan Harris, aged 42, has been charged with first-degree murder in Jalen Stevens’ death. Police are actively searching for additional suspects involved in the attack, including the individual who stabbed Glenn Stevens. The incident was witnessed by bystanders, many of whom recorded the violence instead of intervening. “People just walked past. Nobody offered any help,” Glenn Stevens lamented.
The tragic loss resonates deeply as Jalen Stevens leaves behind four young children, including newborn twins. His partner, LaKaela Harvey, expressed profound grief, stating, “My only daughter will never know what it’s like to have a father.”
As Glenn Stevens continues to heal, he sent a strong message to those involved: “Turn yourself in or give them up. It should’ve never ended with someone dead and another person nearly losing their life.”
The owner of Chita’s Nefertiti Bar issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident, emphasizing their commitment to community safety and unity. They stated, “We have never condoned, supported, or stood for violence of any kind.”
Fundraising efforts are underway to assist Glenn Stevens with medical expenses and support for Jalen’s children. Community members are encouraged to contribute as the family navigates this devastating loss.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the suspects to contact Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
