UPDATE: The Dexter Regional High School Tigers have just secured an impressive $75,000 in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights contest, finishing third nationally with over 500,000 votes. Although they missed out on the $1 million grand prize, the community’s support was pivotal in this achievement, which will significantly aid efforts to improve their athletic facilities.
This competition has sparked a remarkable display of community spirit across Dexter and the broader state of Maine. The Tigers’ strong showing has not only united residents but also drawn attention to the pressing need for field renovations that would allow for home games under the lights—a dream that has eluded the school’s football program due to challenges posed by Maine’s weather.
Despite the overwhelming 2 million votes received by Dierks High School in Arkansas, the Dexter community’s rallying cry for their team proved impactful. The Tigers have now added an additional $50,000 to the $25,000 they received as one of the 25 national finalists, bringing their total to $75,000. This money will bring them closer to their goal of installing lights on their football field.
“We are incredibly thankful to T-Mobile for giving us the opportunity to put a spotlight on our amazing community,” said Adam Gudroe, Dexter’s athletic director and assistant principal, in a press release from T-Mobile. “Our goal from the start was to add lights to our football field, and with the $75,000 we have been awarded, we are even closer to making that goal a reality.”
T-Mobile previously visited Dexter for a home football game on October 18, and they are set to return on November 14 for a celebratory event following the Tigers’ top-three finish. This visit underscores the significance of the competition in fostering community pride and engagement.
The Dexter Tigers have long aspired to host Friday night games, but have been hindered by their current grass field’s ability to withstand harsh winter conditions. The community’s involvement and support during the contest have brought new hope for improvements, showcasing their dedication to the team and its future.
As T-Mobile stated in their press release, “While the Tigers didn’t take home the $1 million grand prize, their creativity, community pride, and all-out hustle elevated this year’s competition to new heights.” The collective effort by the Dexter community has not only brought in funds but also fostered an environment of teamwork and resilience.
As the Tigers gear up for the upcoming celebrations and continue their fundraising efforts, the focus now shifts to how this funding will transform their athletic program. The excitement is palpable as the community awaits further developments in their quest for Friday night lights.
