Born in the spring of 1934 in Rockwell, Iowa, Nelson dedicated his life to education and community engagement. He married his best friend, Carol Thomas, on October 23, 1969. Carol, who died in August 2025, was a constant source of support and companionship for Don.

Nelson is survived by his children, Chris and Cathy, as well as their spouses, Julie and Mike, and five beloved grandchildren: Erald, Bea, Mel, Kaia, and John Weigand. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

For 25 years, Don taught business at various educational institutions, including the Area 1 Vocational Technical School in Calmar. Later, he transitioned to a second career as an estimator at Calmar Manufacturing Company, preparing bids for essential school and hospital fixtures.

A lifelong learner, Nelson was known for his voracious reading habits, often juggling multiple books simultaneously. He generously shared his passion for knowledge by volunteering in local classrooms and teaching in various churches, including Calmar Community United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Waupaca.

Nelson’s community influence extended beyond the classroom. He served on the South Winneshiek School Board and the Winneshiek County Hospital Board in Decorah. A passionate advocate for justice, he supported LGBTQ+ rights and fought against racism throughout his life.

In his spare time, Don enjoyed a range of activities, including camping, canoeing, and attending cultural performances. His love for nature led him to explore national parks, enriching his life and that of his family.

A memorial service to celebrate Nelson’s life will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at First United Methodist Church, located at 203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison. The visitation starts at 1 p.m., followed by a service at 2 p.m., and attendees are invited to an ice cream reception afterward. The service will be live-streamed at fumc.org/memorial.
