Family Honors Medflight Nurse’s Legacy This Thanksgiving

UPDATE: The family of Susan “Suzie” Smith, a dedicated medical flight nurse who tragically died from injuries sustained in a helicopter crash on Highway 50 last month, is facing their first Thanksgiving without her. The emotional weight of the holiday is especially heavy for her son, Gabriel Smith, who emphasized the importance of connection during this difficult time.

As families across the nation gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Smith family is grappling with the profound absence of Suzie. “We are holding up the best we can right now,” Gabriel shared. “My mom prepared us for a lot for this.” His fond memories of dancing with her at Disneyland and the joy she brought to family gatherings now serve as a bittersweet reminder of what they’ve lost.

The family convened for Thanksgiving on November 26, 2023, and many of them are first responders, reflecting the spirit of service that Suzie embodied. Gabriel recounted how her playful nature would fill the room, recalling, “There [were] Hawaiian rolls flying down the table this year as well.” Despite their grief, family members supported one another, creating an atmosphere of love and remembrance.

In honor of Suzie’s legacy, the Smith family has recently launched the Our Angel That Flies Foundation. This initiative aims to continue her mission of providing medical assistance in Central America and establishing a scholarship for aspiring nurses. “She had a passion for… mentoring the young bloods,” Gabriel noted, highlighting his mother’s commitment to uplifting others.

Gabriel encourages everyone to cherish their relationships this holiday season. “At any moment, life can be cut short, so don’t wait to have that hard conversation. Don’t wait to say I’m sorry,” he advised. His heartfelt message resonates deeply, urging people to reach out to those they care about and build connections.
