UPDATE: The Fitchburg Art Museum reopened its doors yesterday, welcoming visitors back after a brief closure and launching its centennial celebrations. The museum is set to showcase two major exhibitions, including the highly anticipated “Tara Sellios: Ask Now the Beasts,” available until May 24, 2024.
Boston-based artist Tara Sellios presents a stunning collection of monumental photographs that celebrate the beauty within the grotesque. Using organic materials such as animal bones and dried flowers, Sellios crafts intricate still life vignettes, photographed with an 8 X 10 camera to reveal striking details. Her work, inspired by historical Christian art, delves into themes of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence, drawing from the Book of Job.
In addition to Sellios’s exhibition, the museum is thrilled to present “FESTIVAL: A Celebration of African Art,” which highlights the diverse cultures across the African continent. This exhibition will run for the next year, showcasing artifacts that reflect universal themes of life, power, and ritual, from ancient terra cottas to contemporary sculptures.
To kick off the centennial celebrations, join the museum for a special event today from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. The Annual Meeting will feature a 100th Anniversary Toast, a visit from the museum’s founder Eleanor Norcross, portrayed by Sally Cragin, and an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming Centennial Exhibition. Guests can enjoy complimentary drinks and appetizers courtesy of Finicky Fork. While sign-up is encouraged to assist with planning, attendance is free and open to the public.
This reopening represents more than just a return to normalcy; it signifies a renewed commitment to the arts and community engagement in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The museum encourages everyone to participate in these landmark events as a way to celebrate not only its rich history but also the vibrant future of art in the region.
