Franklin G. Schappell Passes Away at 91; Funeral Services Set for December 16

URGENT UPDATE: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Township community, has passed away at the age of 91 on December 19, 2025. His death marks the loss of a cherished husband, father, and veteran, leaving behind a legacy of community service and family love.

Franklin was the husband of the late Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who predeceased him on July 31, 2019. Born and raised in Perry Township, he was the son of the late James and Edna (Sunday) Schappell. Franklin graduated from Perry High School in 1952 and was a devoted member of Zion’s Church in Perry Township.

A decorated U.S. Army veteran, Franklin dedicated many years to his profession at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and crafted the famous Berks Hot Dogs, retiring in 1996. He was known for his passion for hunting, farming, gardening, and sports, as well as his deep faith, often found reading the Bible. Franklin also contributed significantly to the maintenance of Zion’s Cemetery.

He is survived by three sons: Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Township, Dennis J. Schappell, married to Lisa (Simmons) of Centre Township, and Gregory C. Schappell, husband of Tulsa (Hosmer) from Shoemakersville. His legacy continues through his three daughters: Denise E. Schappell of Perry Township, Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers from Hamburg, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill, married to Dale Cahill of Geneva, OH. Franklin’s family also includes 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, along with a niece and a nephew.

Franklin’s passing comes as a profound loss to his family and community, especially after the previous loss of his twin daughters, Lori L. and Dori A. Schappell, and his sister, Dorothy (Schappell) Bankes.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will take place in the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Zion’s Cemetery in Perry Township.
