UPDATE: In a stunning comeback, University of Maine freshman goalie Mathis Rousseau made an explosive return to the ice, leading his team to a 3-0 victory over Boston College on Saturday night. Rousseau, who had not played in 21 days, stepped in after Albin Boija allowed six goals in a 7-3 loss the previous night.
The game took place on July 15, 2025, and Rousseau shined with an impressive 21-save shutout, showcasing his skills and determination. “It went pretty well. They’re obviously a good team, and everybody was pretty pumped up to get back at them today after yesterday’s game,” Rousseau stated.
His performance was crucial, especially after acknowledging the challenges of being away from the game. “When you don’t play that much and finally get your chance, you’re pretty pumped up about it, and you have to make sure you’re ready for it,” said Rousseau, a native of Boisbriand, Quebec.
Rousseau previously excelled at the World Junior Championships, starting five games and achieving the tournament’s third-best goals-against average of 2.00 and fourth-best save percentage of .912. Before joining UMaine, he played for Moncton and Halifax in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
Head coach Ben Barr praised Rousseau’s performance, noting, “We gave up some Grade-A chances, but he made some saves all night and kept us ahead.” He also highlighted the team’s improved effort, stating, “The guys blocked more shots and did more of the little things tonight than we did last night. That’s how it got so out of hand last night.”
Freshman right wing Miguel Marques contributed significantly to the victory, scoring two critical goals. Barr remarked, “He is pretty opportunistic. He has a good offensive mind,” underscoring the impact of teamwork in this crucial win.
