BREAKING: A grizzly bear attack on schoolchildren and teachers in Bella Coola, British Columbia, has left 11 people injured, with two individuals critically hurt. The shocking incident occurred Thursday afternoon on a walking trail, approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) northwest of Vancouver.
As of Thursday evening, the Nuxalk Nation reported that the “aggressive bear” remains at large, prompting local authorities to respond urgently. Police and conservation officers are actively on the scene. An official message from the First Nation warned residents: “Officers are armed. Remain indoors and off the highway.”
Emergency Health Services spokesman Brian Twaites confirmed that two victims sustained critical injuries and two others suffered serious injuries, while the remaining individuals received treatment at the scene. The swift response underscores the seriousness of the situation.
Witness accounts describe a chaotic scene. Parent Veronica Schooner shared that efforts were made to stop the bear’s rampage, but unfortunately, one male teacher “got the whole brunt of it.” He was later airlifted from the site for medical attention. Schooner’s 10-year-old son, Alvarez, was among the children attacked; he was so close to the bear that he “even felt its fur.”
“He said that bear ran so close to him, but it was going after somebody else,” Schooner recounted, highlighting the intense fear experienced by the children. Some students were hit with bear spray as teachers bravely fought to protect their students. Alvarez returned home limping, his shoes muddy from running for safety, but his thoughts were with his classmates. “He keeps crying for his friends, and oh my goodness, right away he started praying for his friends,” Schooner added.
In response to the traumatic event, Acwsalcta School, which serves the Nuxalk First Nation, announced it will close on Friday and provide counseling services for affected students and staff. A heartfelt message on the school’s Facebook page stated, “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students.”
As the community grapples with the impact of this alarming bear attack, officials urge everyone to stay vigilant. Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate the bear and ensure the safety of residents in the area.
