URGENT UPDATE: Guam Community College (GCC) has officially unveiled its newly renovated Student Success Center during a grand opening ceremony held on October 13, 2023. This major development, located at the forefront of the Mangilao campus, is a vital step in enhancing educational resources for students, staff, and the wider community.
The 6,000-square-foot facility, also recognized as Building B, is the result of a significant capital improvement project that commenced in July 2022. The upgraded center will now accommodate the Assessment and Counseling Department, GCC Identification Card Services, the Faculty Senate office, and a new computer lab, complete with an outdoor veranda for student use.
“This building serves as the heart of our campus—where student learning, creativity, and success begin,” stated GCC President Mary A.Y. Okada during the ceremony. She emphasized that the concept for the Student Success Center originated from the students themselves, reflecting their needs and aspirations.
Okada remarked, “Our students were the driving force behind this project, just like they have been for many other efforts on campus.” This sentiment was reiterated during GCC’s recent reaffirmation of its eight-year accreditation, showcasing the importance of the student voice in institutional decisions.
The project, costing $6.3 million, was funded through the Governor’s Education Stabilization Fund and GCC’s Capital Projects Fund, meaning it added no debt to the college. “We’re constantly finding creative ways to fund our capital projects through multiple sources. That’s our strength—and our promise to the community,” Okada added.
Notably, the new Student Success Center meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, marking it as the eighth environmentally sustainable building on campus.
The community is urged to take part in the new offerings at the Student Success Center, which is poised to enhance the overall educational experience for all students. As GCC continues to prioritize student needs, this renovation stands as a testament to its commitment to fostering a vibrant learning environment.
