URGENT UPDATE: Hawaii County is taking swift action following the collapse of a section of the Moku‘ola bridge on November 14. The county has initiated emergency procurement procedures to hire a structural engineer to assess the damage and determine the next steps for this vital pedestrian crossing to Moku‘ola, also known as Coconut Island.
The incident occurred when county crews were using a mini-excavator for maintenance. Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma confirmed that the initial evaluation by the engineer will focus on whether the damaged section needs immediate removal or can remain while planning for a new or rehabilitated bridge. “Keeping the failed section in place has the potential for cost savings,” Honma explained, emphasizing the urgency of the evaluation process.
The bridge, which has served the community since 1969, is not only a popular route but also holds deep cultural significance. Mayor Kimo Alameda has stated that all access to Moku‘ola is currently prohibited until safety is ensured. “Our administration is dedicated to restoring access as soon as it is feasible,” Alameda stressed.
The county’s preliminary repair estimate was around $2 million, but Honma indicated that this figure was for replacing only the failed portion of the bridge. “It’s too early to say what the total cost will be,” he noted, highlighting that the scope of the project is yet to be defined.
According to Honma, the overall project duration is anticipated to be between 18 to 24 months, dependent on various external factors, including regulatory approvals. “We will be complying with environmental law,” he added, but it remains uncertain if an environmental assessment will be required.
As the county navigates these challenges, officials are committed to working closely with state and federal agencies to expedite the project. In the meantime, residents and visitors are urged to avoid the closed area for their safety.
