Heroes and Helpers Celebrates 10 Years of Holiday Cheer in Bemidji

UPDATE: Heroes and Helpers has just celebrated its 10th anniversary of spreading holiday cheer in Bemidji, Minnesota, on December 6, 2023. This beloved annual event, hosted by local law enforcement and the Lions Clubs, aims to foster positive relationships between youth and police while providing selected children the chance to shop for gifts.

On Wednesday, children rushed into the makeshift “Sparkle Shop” at the Bemidji Walmart, excited to be paired with local heroes from the Bemidji Fire Department, Bemidji Police Department, and other agencies. With 44 children scheduled to shop this year, the event has grown significantly from its humble beginnings in 2016, when only 20 children participated.

“It’s amazing to see how much this event has expanded,” said Tabitha Carrigan, the event organizer and a Bemidji Police Officer. “We’re excited to include children from Blackduck this year, too. Their local heroes joined us to help create even more joyful memories.”

As participants shopped, they were supported by members of the Bemidji and Blackduck Lions Clubs, who helped wrap their gifts and ensure a seamless experience. Carrigan noted that each child receives $125 to spend, which totals $5,500 for this year alone. Fundraising remains a critical element to sustain the program’s growth, with efforts needed to ensure more children can join in the future.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, long-time Lions Club President Bob Sandbo, who has volunteered for a decade, shared his enthusiasm. “It’s wonderful to help these children experience the joy of giving and receiving during the holidays,” he said. “It’s all about building connections beyond emergency situations.”

With snacks and hot chocolate available, children enjoyed their time with Santa and Mrs. Claus, making for unforgettable moments filled with laughter and joy. Carrigan expressed her joy in seeing the children’s faces light up after their shopping trips, emphasizing the program’s mission to provide positive experiences for those in need.

“This program is a way to create lasting relationships and help our community grow closer,” Carrigan added. “Every year, I look forward to greeting the kids and seeing their excitement. It makes all the planning worthwhile.”

As Heroes and Helpers continues to evolve, the focus remains on community engagement and supporting children during the holiday season. The success of this year’s event highlights the importance of local support, ensuring even more children can participate in the years to come.
