Hiker Falls 500 Feet on Mt. Baldy; 19-Year-Old Identified

UPDATE: A tragic incident on Mt. Baldy has left the hiking community in shock. Coroner’s investigators confirmed that 19-year-old Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, a freshman at Santa Clara University, died after falling approximately 500 feet near Devil’s Backbone while hiking with a friend on Monday, December 31, 2023.

The young man from Seal Beach was home for the holidays when the accident occurred. His friend swiftly called for help, providing GPS coordinates that guided rescuers to the site. Unfortunately, harsh weather conditions, including strong winds, hampered rescue efforts, preventing helicopter recovery on Monday. The bodies of Casanova and two other unidentified men were retrieved the following day.

Casanova’s family expressed their devastation in a heartfelt statement, stating, “We are destroyed by the loss of our beloved Marcus. He was a graduate of Los Alamitos High, an avid outdoorsman, and a sweet, empathetic young man.” His mother, Fabiana Muench Casanova, added, “He was the light in our lives.”

Authorities reported that both novice and experienced hikers face significant risks on Mt. Baldy, especially during winter months when icy conditions prevail. The steep terrain attracts many, including those less prepared for such dangerous hikes. Search-and-rescue teams are frequently dispatched during this season, as many hikers become stranded or injured.

In response to the ongoing treacherous conditions, closures have been announced for the Mt. Baldy area and nearby trails in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument through January 7, 2024. Officials strongly urge the public to avoid these areas to ensure their safety and that of rescue personnel.

As the community mourns this tragic loss, authorities remind hikers to be cautious and well-prepared before embarking on treks in winter conditions. The dangers of Mt. Baldy are real, and the recent fatalities highlight the importance of safety during outdoor adventures.
