UPDATE: Lota Onwuameze led the Illinois Math & Science Academy (IMSA) to a decisive 51-32 victory over St. Edward during a nonconference game on December 15, 2025. The junior forward not only showcased his scoring prowess but also emphasized his mission to unite the team.
Onwuameze, a 6-foot-4 standout from Springfield, delivered a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, continuing his trend of excellence after earning all-conference honors last season. “I think I bring our team together in a way,” Onwuameze stated. “I move the ball, and everybody has their time. We all have fun together.”
IMSA exploded to a commanding 21-1 lead in the first quarter, dominating the game and displaying their deep roster. Alongside Onwuameze, senior forward Omar Njikam added a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Neil Sitapara contributed 12 points, all from beyond the arc.
The Titans, now 6-4 this season, are positioning themselves to be one of the strongest teams in the program’s history. Coach Brad Snead praised Onwuameze’s skill, stating, “Lota is solid. He uses his body very well and is very skilled at his post work.”
The game also marked a significant moment for Njikam, who showcased his athleticism with several fast-break layups. “He’s an athlete,” Snead remarked. “Njikam is versatile on offense and a beast on the offensive glass.”
Onwuameze’s journey to IMSA has been shaped by his love for basketball, which began in childhood. He credits a friend from preschool for introducing him to the sport. “It was hard to give up old friends for basketball, but here I am now,” he reflected, emphasizing his commitment to the game and his teammates.
As the Titans face unique challenges, with players scattering across the state after the school year, their teamwork and chemistry will be crucial as they prepare for upcoming games. Onwuameze, who averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last season, is currently averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds this winter.
With a strong supporting cast and a shared vision, the Titans are looking to make waves in the league. Watch for them as they continue to build momentum and strive for excellence this season.
