Iowa State Football Offense Revamped Ahead of Spring Practice

UPDATE: Iowa State football is undergoing a major overhaul of its offensive strategy as the spring practice season approaches. With just weeks to go, new offensive coordinator Tyler Roehl is focused on integrating a diverse group of coaches to build a competitive offense.

At the Bergstrom Football Complex, Roehl, who previously worked at North Dakota State and South Dakota State, is synthesizing a new offensive vision with a staff that brings varied experiences from different programs. “A lot of us have come from different places,” Roehl stated on February 11. “It’s fun. It’s why I love doing what I do.”

Roehl’s team includes only one familiar face, tight ends coach Seth Hestness, highlighting the challenge of aligning philosophies and strategies. “We’re doing that every single day right now,” Roehl added, emphasizing the urgency of establishing a cohesive offensive identity.

The coaching staff is focused on developing a physical, run-first system that can adapt to the skill sets of the new roster. “It’s been a matter of putting verbiage together, meeting a bunch, getting on the same page,” said offensive line coach Jake Thornton. “We have to squeeze out every ounce of time we have with each other because that’s where this is going to be built through.”

As spring practice looms, Roehl acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding the new players and their fit within the system. “I don’t know the personnel yet,” he admitted. “I have a feeling, but I don’t know.”

With dozens of new players ready to take the field, the clock is ticking for Iowa State football to solidify its offensive plan. Roehl and his staff are committed to refining the approach, ensuring that every player is prepared for the upcoming challenges.

The excitement surrounding this offensive transformation is palpable among fans and stakeholders alike. As the Cyclones gear up for a pivotal spring season, all eyes will be on how quickly Roehl can unite his staff and create a formidable offensive unit.
