Lobos’ Jason Eck Named Mountain West Coach of the Year

URGENT UPDATE: The University of New Mexico is celebrating a historic achievement as Lobos head coach Jason Eck has been named the Mountain West Conference’s Coach of the Year. This announcement comes just ahead of the upcoming bowl selection weekend, where the Lobos, boasting a 9-3 record, are poised for a potential invitation to the New Mexico Bowl on December 27, 2023.

In a remarkable twist, coach Eck’s son, linebacker Jaxton Eck, has also shared the title of Defensive Player of the Year with San Diego State’s Chris Johnson. This is believed to be the first instance in NCAA Division I history where a father and son have simultaneously received these prestigious honors in the same season.

Jason Eck’s recognition marks the first time a Lobos coach has earned the COY award since Rocky Long in 2002. Long notably achieved this without a winning record, making Eck’s accomplishment even more significant.

Jaxton Eck, who transferred to New Mexico after starting his career at Idaho, has made an impressive impact this season, leading the Lobos with 126 tackles, recording a safety, and even completing a pass on a fake punt. His award marks the first time a Lobo has earned Defensive Player of the Year honors since Johnny Jackson in 1982.

Adding to the Lobos’ accolades, edge rusher Keyshawn James-Newby was named to the first team defense, while tight end Dorian Thomas earned first team honors on offense with 53 catches for 545 yards and four touchdowns. Offensive lineman Kaden Robnett was recognized on the second team for not allowing any sacks this season. Additionally, Damon Bankston was named the league’s top kick returner, boasting an impressive 30.4-yard average and a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The Lobos are set to enter the bowl season after a season that has seen them rebuild with over 70 new players added to the roster since Eck’s hiring just one year ago. The team is riding a wave of momentum, sharing first place in the Mountain West.

What’s Next: As the Lobos await their bowl game matchup, fans are eager to see if they can replicate the success of the 1982 team, the only squad in UNM history to achieve a 10-win season. The excitement surrounding the program is palpable as they look to solidify their place in New Mexico football history.

This historic double recognition for the Eck family and the Lobos is not only a testament to their hard work but also a moment of pride for New Mexico fans. As the coaching and playing staff prepare for their upcoming bowl game, the Lobos have united the community with a season full of determination and resilience.
