UPDATE: A routine traffic patrol in southwest Oklahoma took a dramatic turn as Trooper Tyler Shelby delivered a baby on the side of the highway just minutes ago. The incident unfolded on November 22, 2025, when Shelby was called to assist with traffic control for an approaching ambulance.
As he arrived at the scene, Shelby’s dash camera recorded a startling sight: a black Chevrolet Camaro with its passenger door wide open and an expectant mother in distress. Initially, Shelby aimed to calm her, assuring her that help was on the way. But the situation escalated quickly.
“The baby is coming!” the woman exclaimed, prompting Shelby’s immediate response: “Well, don’t push!” However, the warning was too late. Within seconds, he found himself assisting in an unexpected delivery.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that the baby was born just moments after Shelby stepped in. “All I did was play catch,” he later quipped, downplaying the incredible moment.
The ambulance arrived shortly after the delivery and transported both the mother and her newborn son, named Finley, to a nearby hospital for further care. According to the OHP, both mother and baby are doing great.
Despite this extraordinary detour, Trooper Shelby returned to his regular patrol duties immediately after the incident. “Trooper Shelby then went right back to work, ready for the next call,” the agency reported.
OHP highlighted that their troopers receive medical training that includes basic childbirth procedures, although such scenarios are rare. “Our medical training includes the basics of delivering a baby – something we hope we don’t encounter often – but when the moment comes, our troopers are ready to help,” the agency stated.
The OHP extended their congratulations to the family, expressing joy for the new arrival. “To the family, we are thrilled for you and grateful that Trooper Shelby could be there in your moment of need! Congratulations on your new arrival!”
Unusual roadside deliveries have occurred before; earlier this year, a couple in Michigan welcomed a baby in a McDonald’s parking lot during an urgent rush to the hospital.
