UPDATE: Operation Holiday is gearing up to provide essential support to 199 families this Christmas season, offering hope amid challenging times. The program, which has been running for over three decades, aims to ensure food is on the table and gifts are under the tree.
Spencer, a father from Montgomery County, is navigating significant financial strain after losing his maintenance job a few months ago. He and his wife, Diana, have faced tough decisions, often choosing between essentials like clean clothes and food. “I’ve been having to decide clean clothes or food some days,” Spencer revealed, highlighting the urgent need for support during this holiday season.
Operation Holiday, initiated in 1991 by The Mercury in Pottstown, has grown to serve thousands across Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. This year, the initiative has partnered with 21 agencies to assist families facing difficulties, ensuring that 403 children receive gifts and meals.
Spencer credits his faith and support from community resources for helping his family through these tough times. “God constantly reminds me,” he said, as he prepares for a modest holiday celebration with his 6-year-old daughter, Ariah. The family is set to receive grocery and gift cards through Operation Holiday, which will help ease their burdens.
Last year, Operation Holiday raised nearly $85,000, providing vital resources to 366 children and 189 families. This year, the program continues to operate with no overhead costs, ensuring that all funds directly assist local families in need.
As families like Spencer’s prepare for the holidays, the urgency for community support has never been greater. “A month ago, it was even worse,” Spencer shared. “I didn’t know whether we were going to have a roof over our heads.” His story encapsulates the struggles many are facing, underscoring the importance of initiatives like Operation Holiday.
For those wishing to contribute, donations are tax-deductible and can be made online at the TriCounty Community Network’s secure portal or by mailing checks to various local addresses. The community’s generosity is crucial as the program aims to continue its mission of support and compassion.
As the holiday season approaches, the impact of Operation Holiday will be felt by many families throughout the region. With the collaboration of local agencies and the unwavering support of the community, hope is alive and well this Christmas.
