Operation Holiday Launches: Urgent Aid for Local Families Now

UPDATE: Operation Holiday has officially launched its 2023 campaign, providing urgent assistance to families in need throughout the Pottsgrove area and beyond. With a mission to ensure no child goes without gifts this Christmas, the initiative is set to support 199 families and 403 children this holiday season.

Isabel, a mother of three living in Pottsgrove, reflects on her struggles and the vital support she has received from local agencies. “I had to push around my bills, and what I’m paying, and then use it for food,” she said, emphasizing the challenges many families face. Health issues have left her unable to work, but she remains grateful for the assistance from the Montgomery County Assistance Office and local food pantries.

This year, Operation Holiday aims to distribute $85,000 in donations, offering gift cards for food and presents. Last year, the program helped 366 children and provided grocery gift cards to 189 families, ensuring they could celebrate the holidays with essentials and gifts.

Isabel, who has faced numerous hardships, including her youngest daughter’s heart condition, is thankful for the resources available. “They’ve helped me out a lot — with the LIHEAP program, food stamps, and cash assistance at one point,” she said. As the holidays approach, her daughters have shared their wish lists: gift cards, art supplies, and winter clothing.

Operation Holiday, which began in 1991, partners with local agencies to reach families who have been referred for assistance. This year, it has expanded its collaboration to 21 agencies in the tri-county area to maximize its outreach and impact. Families in need must be referred by these agencies to ensure targeted help.

In a remarkable show of community spirit, Isabel also strives to give back. “I help out a few people I know, when they need help with food, if I have it,” she stated. This cycle of support highlights the ongoing need for community-driven assistance as many families navigate financial uncertainty.

The operational integrity of Operation Holiday is underscored by its no-overhead model, ensuring that all funds remain within local communities. Gift cards from Boscov’s and food assistance from Weis Markets further enhance the program’s capacity to deliver meaningful support this season.

As challenges from state and federal budget issues continue to affect families, Isabel’s resilience shines through. “I’m catching back up on everything,” she said, reflecting a determination shared by many in similar situations.
