UPDATE: The highly anticipated holiday lights display in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, known as “Peteyville,” officially launched on November 28. Residents and visitors can now enjoy this festive transformation through January 4, with over 59 sponsored displays illuminating the town.
Doug Bruggeman, a retired high school teacher, takes on the role of the “mayor of Peteyville” each holiday season. Just days before the display opened, he and his team were busy setting up, arranging colorful lights, nutcrackers, and festive decorations. “They end up looking pretty sweet when they start to get lit up,” Bruggeman shared, reflecting on the long hours spent preparing.
This dazzling display began four years ago when Bruggeman had his “light bulb” moment to decorate the town’s suspension bridge. “One of the things I talked to my students about was having big hairy, audacious visions,” he explained. That vision has now transformed into a beloved local tradition, expanding to include multiple parks and attracting visitors from afar.
Pelican Rapids is known for its grand holiday spirit, featuring the world-record Pelican Pete as a centerpiece. The display now stretches from the iconic bridge to Pelican Pete, covering three parks and showcasing countless twinkling lights. “It’s pretty amazing,” Bruggeman said, noting the growth of the event over the years.
Local families are already making plans to visit Peteyville. One resident mentioned, “‘My adult children are bringing our grandchildren here from California,’” emphasizing the draw of this magical holiday experience. Bruggeman remarked on the emotional impact of the display, saying, “A bunch of people were like, ‘Man, this is like a Hallmark movie.’”
The lights not only brighten the town but also create memorable experiences for families and friends during the holiday season. The atmosphere is festive and electric, making all the hard work worthwhile for Bruggeman and his crew.
