Plante Brothers Shine in Bulldogs’ 7-3 Victory Over Beavers

UPDATE: The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs secured a commanding 7-3 victory against the Bemidji State Beavers on October 27, 2023, with standout performances from brothers Zam and Max Plante, who each notched a collegiate-high of four points. The duo’s explosive play, including two goals and two assists apiece, was pivotal in the Bulldogs’ comeback from an early deficit.
The game, held at the Sanford Center, started ominously for UMD as they faced a 2-0 deficit within the first five minutes. However, the Bulldogs rallied with three unanswered goals before the first intermission. Max Plante and Jayson Shaugabay quickly tied the game, followed by a goal from senior defenseman Joey Pierce, who is also from Hermantown, giving UMD a crucial lead.
Earlier in the second period, Max Plante scored his first shorthanded goal for the Bulldogs, showcasing his speed on a breakaway. The Plante brothers, along with their linemate Shaugabay, were instrumental on the ice, consistently pressuring the Beavers’ defense. Shaugabay also had a career night, contributing one goal and three assists, bringing his season tally to nine points.
The Bulldogs’ power play, which had struggled earlier this season, went 2-for-4 against Bemidji State. Notably, Zam Plante capitalized on two power-play opportunities, emphasizing the team’s improvement in this critical area. This performance marks a significant turnaround, as UMD had been just 1-for-15 in power plays before this matchup.
Sophomore goaltender Adam Gajan made 17 saves on 20 shots, helping to secure the win. The Bulldogs’ offensive depth was evident as rookie center Daniel Shlaine scored his first collegiate goal, extending the lead to 5-2 early in the second period.
The emotional impact of the game was palpable, especially for Joey Pierce, whose goal marked only the second of his college career, adding to the Bulldogs’ momentum. The team now looks ahead to a rematch against the Beavers at 6:07 PM on October 28, 2023, at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. This game is part of a doubleheader, with the women’s team facing Minnesota State earlier at 2 PM.
Fans are encouraged to attend what promises to be an exciting continuation of this rivalry, as the Bulldogs won’t be back home until November 7-8 against St. Cloud State. With the Bulldogs on the road in the upcoming weekends against Minnesota and North Dakota, every game counts as they build momentum for the season.
Stay tuned for updates as the Bulldogs aim to maintain their winning streak and capitalize on their recent successes.
