Quince Wins Legal Battle, Court Confirms Designs Are Classic

UPDATE: In a major legal victory for Quince, a court has confirmed that the retailer’s designs are classic and not copies, as claimed by Deckers Outdoor Corporation. This ruling, announced on October 22, 2025, in San Francisco, reinforces Quince’s commitment to timeless design and fair pricing, delivering a significant win for consumers.
The court decisively ruled that multiple designs cited by Deckers are generic and thus ineligible for trade dress protection. This critical finding highlights that Quince’s offerings are rooted in classic styles that have been available in the industry for decades. Notably, the court acknowledged that at least 14 different companies provide similar designs, underscoring that these styles are commonplace and not exclusive to Deckers or any single brand.
Additionally, the court’s ruling restricts Deckers from pursuing lost profits as a measure of damages for their remaining design patent claim, marking another substantial limitation on the case.
“This ruling is a win for consumers and for common sense,” said Joel Dion, Head of Legal at Quince. He emphasized that punishing companies like Quince for offering quality, timeless styles at fair prices reflects a problematic approach from larger brands. “These designs have been around for decades, and we’re making them accessible without the markup.”
Quince was established to challenge the misconception that quality and affordability cannot coexist. The brand achieves this by eliminating unnecessary markups, partnering directly with top factories and suppliers—those used by leading luxury houses—to deliver enduring wardrobe and home essentials. Their products utilize world-class materials, including Grade-A Mongolian cashmere, fine mulberry silk, European linen, and Italian leather.
Dion further criticized the “dupe” narrative propagated by larger brands. “Quince isn’t a dupe. We’re the antidote, proof that beautiful and timeless design can, and should, be available to everyone,” he stated.
Quince continues to focus on luxury designs that are built to last, offering a range of products from cashmere sweaters to silk slip dresses, diamond rings, and linen bed sheets. As the brand forges ahead, it remains committed to making high-quality fashion accessible to all.
