Runners Set to Tackle 62-Mile Murphy’s Challenge on March 14

URGENT UPDATE: A growing number of runners are gearing up for an extraordinary challenge: a 62-mile run connecting all five Murphy’s grocery stores in Humboldt County. Scheduled for March 14, 2024, this ambitious event, dubbed the Murphy’s 100k, promises to be a unique blend of endurance, community spirit, and fundraising.

Organized by ultrarunner Pete Ciotti, the race aims to support local businesses and residents affected by the devastating fire on January 2. Runners will embark from the Trinidad Murphy’s, traversing picturesque landscapes including Scenic Drive, Clam Beach, and the Hammond Coast Trail, before finishing back at Sunny Brae.

This is not just a race; it’s a call to action. Ciotti has waived registration fees, instead encouraging participants to donate to those impacted through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. Murphy’s grocery stores will also contribute by allowing customers to round up their bills to support the cause in the week leading up to the event.

Since announcing the run just yesterday, interest has surged, with approximately 15 runners already signed up. Notably, one group is planning to undertake the challenge in a relay format, highlighting the event’s community aspect. Ciotti, known for his enthusiasm and commitment to local causes, expressed his excitement for the event, stating, “It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area.”

This event offers a chance to connect with fellow running enthusiasts while contributing to a meaningful cause. With aid stations set up at each Murphy’s location, participants can refuel and support one another along the route.

As Ciotti put it, “In these dark times, it’s good to have people like that who are doing positive things.” The Murphy’s 100k is more than just a race; it’s a beacon of hope and community resilience.
