Sacramento Man Convicted of Attempted Murder in Family Attack

UPDATE: A Sacramento court has just convicted Hamdi Bazyan of multiple charges, including attempted murder and animal cruelty, after a disturbing attack on his parents and family cat in December 2021. This urgent verdict, delivered on Thursday, follows chilling testimonies that reveal the violent nature of the assault.

The jury found Bazyan guilty of two counts of attempted murder, one count of animal cruelty, two counts of false imprisonment, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The court also confirmed serious allegations of causing great bodily injury and personal use of a knife, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The violent events unfolded on December 26, 2021, when Bazyan’s erratic behavior prompted his family to contact the police. After the officers left, Bazyan armed himself with three large knives and confined his parents in their bedroom, brutally assaulting them with his fists and a cane.

As the violence escalated, Bazyan turned on the family cat, stabbing her nine times and attempting to suffocate her. The horrifying attack continued as he stabbed his mother in the torso while his father sustained multiple stab wounds while trying to defend his wife.

“His mother was able to escape to a neighbor’s home to call police,” reported Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James of the Elder Abuse Unit. Bazyan fled upon hearing the police sirens but was later apprehended near the American River bridge.

Both of Bazyan’s parents survived the brutal attack, thanks to life-saving aid following his mother’s desperate escape. The family cat also managed to survive the ordeal, highlighting the harrowing nature of this incident.

Bazyan now faces significant prison time, with sentencing scheduled for a later date, as stated by the District Attorney’s Office. This case serves as a stark reminder of domestic violence and its devastating impact on families.
