URGENT UPDATE: Sacramento has made significant strides in its battle against homelessness, managing 2,096 cases in just one week, according to the latest report from the City’s Incident Management Team (IMT). This report, detailing activities from November 10-16, 2023, highlights the city’s proactive measures in addressing the critical issue of unsheltered individuals.
During this period, the city received 544 calls to its 311 customer service line, leading to a surge in case openings. Notably, the number of cases exceeds the call volume, as multiple cases can arise from a single call, reflecting the complexity of the homelessness crisis. In a positive turn, 2,466 cases were also closed, indicating successful resolutions or compliance achieved.
The report emphasizes human impact, with the Department of Community Response successfully enrolling 74 individuals into databases linking them to vital shelters and resources. Additionally, 17 people were placed in housing at either the City’s Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) during this time.
However, the city faces ongoing challenges. There are currently zero Pallet homes and zero trailers available at the Roseville Road campus, along with only two spaces left at the OEC. City-funded shelters are averaging just 13 openings, highlighting the urgent need for more housing solutions.
The IMT’s efforts also included a substantial cleanup initiative, resulting in the removal of a staggering 50,140 pounds of trash from city streets, underscoring the visible impact of homelessness on the community.
Sacramento’s commitment to transparency is evident, as residents can track weekly progress through a public data dashboard that has been available since September 2023. This dashboard provides cumulative figures for outreach, compliance, and cleanup efforts, reinforcing the city’s dedication to managing this crisis effectively.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Sacramento to see how these efforts evolve and what further actions will be taken to provide sustainable solutions for homelessness in the city.
