Samuel Bennett Johnson, II Passes Away at 83 in Capitola, CA

BREAKING: Samuel Bennett Johnson, II, a beloved figure from Capitola, CA, has passed away at the age of 83 due to complications related to Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. The news comes just hours after family and friends gathered to celebrate his remarkable life.

Known for his infectious optimism, Sam was often heard responding to inquiries about his well-being with a heartfelt, “Never better!” His passing leaves a profound void for his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann Johnson, their three children, and seven grandchildren.

Born in 1942 on Coronado Island, San Diego, Sam was a self-proclaimed “beach bum” who cherished the ocean. He spent his youth indulging in spearfishing, body surfing, and sailing. In 1960, he relocated to Wisconsin, where he pursued an engineering degree at UW Madison and met his lifelong partner, Mary Ann Schanen.

In 1967, Sam and Mary Ann wed and raised their family in Wauwatosa, WI. Their Midwestern roots were strong, but in 1981, Sam accepted a position with Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA, marking the family’s return to California. After 23 years of dedicated service, he retired at 62, embracing a new chapter in Capitola.

Retirement brought Sam back to the beach, where he and Mary Ann built a home above New Brighton Beach. Their cherished moments included camping and beach outings with their grandchildren. An avid rower, Sam and Mary Ann were key members of the Santa Cruz Rowing Club, fostering friendships and community spirit. Even when unable to row, Sam contributed by teaching others how to rig and repair boats.

Sam’s engineering skills shone in his garage workshop, where he spent countless afternoons “puttering” and “tinkering”. His passions included fixing things, enjoying jazz, sampling craft beers, and soaking up the California sun.

Sam is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; children Christine Abusaidi of Angels Camp, CA, Mike Johnson (Angela) of San Jose, CA, and Julie Longmire (Lance) of Pleasanton, CA; and grandchildren AliKhan, Arman, Amir, Nathan, Thomas, Luke, and Cooper.

The family expresses deep gratitude to Santa Cruz Hospice for their compassionate care during Sam’s final days. In lieu of flowers, they invite those wishing to honor Sam’s memory to consider a donation to hospice services.

As we mourn the loss of an extraordinary husband, father, and friend, Sam’s vibrant spirit will undoubtedly continue to resonate with all who knew him. Stay tuned for more updates as we celebrate the life of this remarkable individual whose legacy will live on.
