UPDATE: San Jose State suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat, falling 30-25 to Utah State on Friday night, marking their fourth loss by a single score this season. The Spartans rallied from an eight-point deficit to take a 25-24 lead early in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t seal the deal as the clock ran out.

This latest loss leaves San Jose State with a dismal 2-5 record and a challenging path ahead in the Mountain West Conference. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo described the losses as “gut wrenching, heart ripping losses” that have left players and fans devastated.

Despite injuries to key players like NCAA-leading receiver Danny Scudero and quarterback Walker Eget, both fought through to contribute. Eget completed 27 of 49 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns, while Scudero, who entered the game leading the nation with 50 receptions and 845 yards, managed only six catches for 25 yards and received medical attention multiple times.

The Spartans now face a critical juncture in their season, needing to win four of their last five games to secure bowl eligibility. They are set to have a bye week before facing a tough Hawaii team on November 1 at CEFCU Stadium. Hawaii is exceeding expectations with a 5-2 record, while San Jose State must overcome the mental toll of this ongoing losing streak.

In a dramatic finish against Utah State, the Spartans had multiple opportunities to win but fell short after a fourth-and-1 failure and a last-minute drive that was thwarted by a batted ball in the end zone. “Our guys are hurting,” Niumatalolo stated. “We go into the bye week first and foremost to try and get healthy physically.”

For the third time in four games, San Jose State held a fourth-quarter lead, only to watch it slip away. They previously lost a 30-29 game against Stanford and a 35-28 defeat to Wyoming, both after leading late. The Spartans’ defensive struggles have also been a recurring theme, with missed assignments allowing big plays against them, including a crucial 30-yard pass conversion on fourth down during the Utah State game.

Despite these challenges, players like running back Steve Chavez-Soto stepped up, achieving a career-high of 102 rushing yards with a 66-yard touchdown run. Fellow back Lamar Radcliffe added 74 yards on the ground, showcasing depth in the running game amidst the injuries.

As the Spartans regroup during their bye week, they must strategize for a challenging finish against top-tier opponents in the Mountain West. The team’s recent history offers a glimmer of hope; following a 1-5 start in 2023, they won six straight to clinch a bowl game. The stakes are high, and fans are eager to see if San Jose State can replicate that resilience.

Stay tuned for further updates on San Jose State as they prepare for their next battle against Hawaii, hoping to turn their season around after another tough loss. The urgency to win has never been greater as they aim to avoid a season defined by heartbreak.
