Skoda Revives Classic 1000 MBX with Futuristic Design Twist
BREAKING: Skoda has unveiled a stunning reimagining of the iconic 1000 MBX, integrating its modern design language into one of the rarest models in automotive history. This exciting development comes as part of Skoda’s “Icons Get a Makeover” series, showcasing the brand’s commitment to blending nostalgia with cutting-edge design.
The original 1000 MBX debuted in 1966 and was produced until 1969, with only 1,403 units ever made. Skoda is now breathing new life into this classic, applying its latest “Modern Solid” styling to a concept that emphasizes both innovation and respect for heritage.
This modern iteration features a boxy coupe design, reminiscent of the original, but enhances it with contemporary elements such as rear-hinged doors similar to those of the Mazda RX-8. With four sliding doors, accessing the bench-style front seats and cinema-like rear seats has never been easier. The design team, led by Antti Savio for the exterior and David Stingl for the cabin, completed this ambitious project in just four weeks.
Importantly, this concept remains strictly digital, with no plans for production. Skoda highlights that this is a “what if” exercise, allowing designers to explore features not found in any current models, including a height-adjustable air suspension. While the compact coupe mirrors its predecessor in spirit, it also draws parallels with the Nissan IDx, another notable retro-futuristic design.
This digital concept also boasts unique touches like a glass-covered oval dashboard, showcasing Skoda’s innovative approach to automotive design. The Vision O, a large electric wagon expected to enter production in the coming years, is the latest real-life model to feature the Modern Solid design philosophy.
As Skoda continues to explore these fascinating design avenues, the 1000 MBX stands as a testament to the brand’s ability to blend the past with the future. While these projects may not make it to showrooms, they spark excitement and conversation among automotive enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Stay tuned for more updates on Skoda’s evolving design landscape and the potential future of electric vehicles with a nod to classic heritage.
