UPDATE: The SMU Mustangs’ defense is BACK and firing on all cylinders! In a stunning turnaround, SMU overwhelmed Boston College with a decisive 45-13 victory on October 4, 2025, marking perhaps their most dominant performance of the season.
After a rocky 2-2 start, expectations were low for the Mustangs’ defense, which had been the best in the ACC last season. Defensive coordinator Scott Symons faced tough questions from the media as his rebuilding unit struggled early on. But everything changed when conference play commenced.
Against Boston College, the Mustangs showcased a transformed defense that did not just stop plays but dominated them. Safety Ahmaad Moses set the tone early, recovering two fumbles in the first quarter, while defensive end Isaiah Smith wreaked havoc with an astonishing four sacks and nine tackles. Smith’s performance tied a program record for most sacks in a game and brought him within one sack of the all-time record.
“He’s a complete player,” said head coach Rhett Lashlee, praising Smith’s evolution during the season. “What he’s done, especially with key players out, has been remarkable.” The Mustangs were indeed missing defensive lineman Cam Robertson and cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr., forcing younger players like true freshman Tyren Polley Jr. to rise to the occasion. Polley recorded eight tackles and an interception that led to a touchdown, further solidifying his place in the lineup.
SMU’s defense was relentless, holding Boston College to just 2 of 15 on third downs and 4 of 7 on fourth downs, effectively shutting down the Eagles’ attempts to extend drives. Even as Boston College racked up 382 yards of offense, SMU’s defense excelled in crucial moments, forcing field goals and halting the run game.
Boston College only managed to score one field goal before half-time, and their first touchdown didn’t come until there were fewer than nine minutes left in the game. The Mustangs allowed just 98 rushing yards on 40 attempts, showcasing their defensive prowess.
With the offense scoring on three consecutive drives during the third quarter, the game felt out of reach for the Eagles. Now, SMU is on a mission, with players like Isaiah Smith expressing their determination to achieve the same goals as last season: “All roads lead to Charlotte,” he declared, referencing the ACC Championship.
This commanding win not only boosts the Mustangs’ confidence but also sends a strong message across the conference: SMU is back, and they mean business. As they prepare for their next challenges, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this revitalized defense continues to perform.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Mustangs aim to carry this momentum forward!
