UPDATE: Soquel High’s water polo teams have made headlines by sweeping the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) titles in dramatic fashion. Earlier today, the boys’ team defeated defending champions Santa Cruz High with a final score of 15-10, while the girls’ team dominated with a staggering 19-2 victory.

In a match that showcased their determination and skill, the boys’ team, ranked No. 3 in the Central Coast Section, took control early and maintained their perfect league record at 4-0. Senior Stryder Stelck led the charge with four goals and two assists. “This is nice, but we’re not done yet,” said Knights coach Ryan Chapatte, emphasizing their focus on the upcoming playoffs.

This intense rivalry saw Soquel and Santa Cruz face off for the third time this season, following a narrow victory for Soquel at the Monterey Bay Invitational on October 11. “It’s a really important win to show who we are as a team,” said junior Gabriel Suarez-Abraham, who contributed significantly with three goals and four assists.

The match was marked by physical play, resulting in 12 player ejections, but the Knights’ offensive strategy and stamina proved decisive. With junior Tanner Connors scoring three goals, Soquel established an early lead that they never relinquished.

As the teams prepare for the upcoming SCCAL Tournament championship next weekend, the Knights’ depth and teamwork will be crucial. “Our offense looked good,” Chapatte noted, praising the contributions from multiple players.

Meanwhile, the girls’ team continued its league dominance, securing their 15th straight league title in a stunning performance against Santa Cruz. With a talent-rich lineup, they never trailed and outscored their opponents with a remarkable run of 15 unanswered goals. Coach Shelby White expressed satisfaction with their execution heading into the playoffs, stating, “We want to make sure we’re playing our best game.”

The Knights demonstrated their prowess with contributions from all players, including junior Elizabeth Penny who scored three goals. Their impressive teamwork led to a total of 21 steals throughout the match, showcasing their defensive skills as well.

As both teams gear up for the playoffs, Soquel’s next challenge includes a match against No. 9 Los Altos on Saturday at 11 a.m. The excitement surrounding these victories has captured the attention of fans and is expected to drive attendance and support in the upcoming tournaments.

Stay tuned for further updates as Soquel High aims to continue their successful run in the playoffs, with both teams eager to make a significant impact on their respective leagues.
