Stanford QB Status Uncertain as Team Prepares for No. 9 Miami

UPDATE: Stanford University’s starting quarterback situation is in flux ahead of their critical matchup against the No. 9 Miami Hurricanes. The game is set for Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 4 p.m. ET and Stanford enters as a staggering 30.5-point underdog.
Redshirt freshman Elijah Brown could be making his first start of the season, as current starter Ben Gulbranson suffered a knee injury during last week’s 20-13 victory over Florida State. Gulbranson was helped off the field after being sacked in the second quarter, prompting Brown’s entrance, where he completed 6 of 12 passes for 71 yards.
Brown’s performance was steady, and he led a critical 94-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter, helping Stanford secure the upset win. However, the team struggled in the fourth quarter, managing just 25 yards on four possessions. The stakes are high as Brown prepares to potentially lead the Cardinal against a formidable Miami defense that allows the fewest points in the ACC at just 15.3 points per game.
“I think just keeping a level head and just staying the course is the key to that win,” Brown said after the game.
Despite his success, Brown’s starting status remains uncertain. When asked about his potential start against Miami, he noted it was ultimately up to the coaches. Interim coach Frank Reich did not provide an update on Gulbranson’s health during Monday’s press conference, stating, “You know, if I have something, I’m not afraid to give it to you guys. But as of right now, I’m really not prepared with anything.”
Miami is coming off a disappointing loss to Louisville but boasts significant victories over teams such as Notre Dame and Florida this season. As Stanford gears up for this pivotal clash, the uncertainty surrounding their starting quarterback adds an extra layer of tension to the matchup.
Brown has previous experience, having started one game last season against SMU, where he completed 16 of 32 passes for 153 yards but faced challenges, including being sacked five times in a 40-10 loss.
With the game approaching, fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring the situation. Stanford’s ability to perform against a top-ranked opponent will hinge on the quarterback’s readiness and effectiveness. Stay tuned for further updates as the kickoff draws near.
