Steelers Keep Will Howard Inactive for Week 8 vs. Packers
UPDATE: The Pittsburgh Steelers have confirmed that rookie quarterback Will Howard will remain inactive for Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers. Despite recently opening his practice window, the team is not yet ready to activate him from the Injured Reserve, where he has been since suffering a broken bone in his throwing hand during training camp.
Howard rejoined practice for the first time this week, sparking excitement as he prepares to return to competitive play. However, he will miss another game, extending his absence since the preseason. The Steelers had previously placed Howard on Injured Reserve after finalizing their 53-man roster.
With the recent release of quarterback Logan Woodside from the practice squad, the Steelers now have only two active quarterbacks, which hints at a potential return for Howard later in the season. “It was like all that joy of being a little kid playing football again came back,” Howard said, sharing his enthusiasm about returning to practice. “I don’t think I’ve ever smiled more on two handoff plays in my life.”
Despite his inactive status, Howard has remained a vital presence within the team, building a strong rapport with players, including veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith humorously noted, “It’s been like having another quality control around the building. Call him Coach Will. Now he’s back to being player Will.”
The Steelers have a 21-day window to activate Howard; if they decide against it, he will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Tactical decisions loom as the team has only seven designated return spots left, with several players, including Malik Harrison and Cory Trice Jr., already on IR.
As the Steelers prepare for their matchup against the Packers, fans are left wondering how the team will manage their quarterback situation. The potential return of Howard could provide a much-needed boost for the second half of the season, but the coaching staff may opt to fully utilize the available time to assess the team’s overall health and readiness.
Stay tuned for further updates on Howard’s status and what it could mean for the Steelers as they gear up for a critical game against the Packers.
