UPDATE: A would-be thief’s attempt to burglarize a bicycle store in San Luis Obispo was thwarted early Saturday morning when his stolen truck broke down during the getaway. This incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. at the Cambria Bike Outfitters on Monterey Street.
According to local police, the suspect had stolen a truck from Santa Maria on Friday. He then crashed the vehicle through a window of the bike shop, but his plan unraveled when the damaged truck failed to start as he attempted to flee. In a dramatic twist, an ambulance passed by just as the thief was trying to escape.
In a last-ditch effort, the suspect unloaded one of the bikes from the truck bed and rode off, leaving the truck and other items behind. Officers later recovered the abandoned bike several blocks away from the scene.
Surveillance footage has captured the suspect, who was seen wearing gloves, a dark jacket, a beanie hat, and a headlamp, making it crucial for anyone with information to come forward.
Local authorities are urging the public to assist in the investigation. Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has details about the incident is encouraged to contact Officer Kuhn at 594-8037 or to provide anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers at 549-7867.
