Thousands of Orthodox Jews Protest Military Conscription in NYC

UPDATE: A chaotic protest erupted in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday, October 15, 2023, as thousands of Orthodox Jews clashed with police over forced military conscription in Israel. The demonstration, which drew upwards of 10,000 participants, aimed to raise awareness about what they describe as the mistreatment of their community by the Israeli government.
The protest began in the afternoon and quickly escalated as demonstrators attempted to flood the streets near the Israeli consulate located at 800 2nd Ave. NYPD officers struggled to manage the surge, wrestling with metal guardrails and urging the crowd to stay on the sidewalks. Eyewitnesses reported that some protesters darted into traffic, prompting tense confrontations with officers, who were heard shouting, “Get back on the sidewalk, now!” through megaphones.
Rabbi Issac Green, a prominent figure at the event, stated, “Americans are unaware of Israel’s horrific treatment of Orthodox Jews. From night raids in Orthodox neighborhoods to checkpoints to arrests of Yeshiva students, Israel is persecuting the very religious people that it claims to protect.” His remarks highlight the emotional weight of the demonstration, as both young children and elderly citizens joined the cause, standing on trash cans and Citibike racks to be seen.
As the evening progressed, the crowd swelled, leading to a chaotic scene where police used barricades and tape in an attempt to contain the overflow. Despite their efforts, several clashes broke out between officers and demonstrators. However, sources from the NYPD confirmed that no arrests were made during the event, even as tensions escalated.
The mass gathering was organized by the Central Rabbinical Congress and received backing from both the Satmar and Grand Rebbes. Protesters expressed deep concerns over being compelled to join an army that they feel is against their religious beliefs.
This urgent demonstration not only reflects the ongoing tensions surrounding military conscription in Israel but also highlights the broader struggles faced by the Orthodox Jewish community. Observers and participants alike are calling for increased awareness and change, emphasizing that these issues must be addressed immediately.
As the protest continues to unfold, all eyes are on the NYC streets, where the situation remains dynamic. Authorities are urging protesters to maintain peace, while community leaders are calling for dialogue and understanding.
Stay tuned for updates as this developing story continues to capture the attention of both local and international audiences.
