Three Arrested at UC Berkeley During Turning Point USA Event

UPDATE: Tensions escalated at UC Berkeley on Monday night as officers arrested three individuals during a Turning Point USA event, marking the organization’s first visit to a California campus since the recent shooting of co-founder Charlie Kirk on September 10. The event, part of the “American Comeback Tour,” drew hundreds of protesters expressing their opposition, leading to chaotic scenes outside Zellerbach Hall.

The situation intensified when two people were detained following a violent altercation outside the venue. One protester, identifiable by a red shirt with the word “freedom,” was left with visible injuries, including a bloodied face. A third individual was arrested after breaching barricades that separated protesters from attendees.

Protesters hurled glass containers filled with a blue liquid toward event goers, forcing many to retreat into the hall. Additionally, a rock was thrown, striking a helmeted officer’s face shield. The aggressive demonstrations have highlighted rising concerns over political violence at universities and the challenges of balancing free speech with campus safety.

Security measures were heightened, with officers from neighboring agencies and across the UC system deployed to ensure safety. UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof stated, “We have an unwavering commitment to supporting any and every student group who wishes to meet on campus. Our responsibility is to ensure they provide the resources necessary to keep people safe.”

Eyewitness Brynn Pannier, an 18-year-old attendee who traveled from Davis, recounted the fear experienced during the event. “That was really scary,” she said. “Things were being thrown, you know, and I lost my friends.”

The significant police presence surprised many, including junior Anika Yadav, who remarked, “It’s crazy to see the amount of police force out here. It’s shocking to see this.”

As authorities continue to assess the situation, more updates are anticipated. This incident underscores the ongoing debates surrounding safety, free speech, and political discourse in academic environments.
