UPDATE: A shocking tragedy has unfolded in Istanbul as a Turkish-German family of four has likely been poisoned by pesticide gas during their hotel stay. Preliminary autopsy reports, cited by Turkey’s state-run news agency, indicate that the Bocek family was exposed to dangerous phosphine gas emitted from insecticides used in their hotel room.
The family, who had traveled from Germany, checked into a hotel in the Fatih district of Istanbul. On November 12, 2025, they began experiencing severe illness and sought medical attention, initially taking a taxi to a nearby hospital. After returning to the hotel, their condition worsened, leading to an ambulance transfer the following day. Tragically, the children, Kadir Muhammet, aged 6, and Masal, aged 3, succumbed to their illnesses that day. Their mother, Cigdem Bocek, passed away on November 14, while their father, Servet Bocek, died on November 17.
This devastating incident has raised alarms about hotel safety standards in Turkey, prompting urgent calls for stricter regulations. A preliminary investigation revealed the presence of phosphine gas on towels, masks, and various swab samples taken from the hotel room, according to Anadolu Agency. Authorities confirmed that the family was not poisoned by food, dismissing earlier speculations regarding street food consumed during their visit.
The tragedy has not only claimed four lives but has also impacted other guests at the hotel. Two additional tourists reported nausea and vomiting and were hospitalized for treatment. In response to the incident, Turkish authorities have arrested 11 individuals linked to the hotel’s management and operations, and the establishment has been closed pending further investigations.
