UPDATE: The University of Iowa Retiree Association has just launched a vital fundraiser, “Music, Meals, and Making a Difference,” at Tavern Blue on February 15, 2023, targeting the urgent issue of food insecurity affecting students and staff. This event, in collaboration with the UI Food Pantry Organization, aims not just to raise funds but to elevate awareness about this pressing problem.
As food insecurity rates soar—reaching a staggering 61% among graduate students, 21% among undergraduates, and 18% among faculty and staff—organizers stress the importance of community support. “The main goal of this fundraiser isn’t even to raise money; it’s more about raising awareness around the issue of food insecurity,” stated Steph Beecher, the basic needs coordinator for the Division of Student Life.
The lively atmosphere at Tavern Blue featured performances by the band HomeBrewed, delighting attendees with classic tunes from legends like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. The energetic crowd danced and sang along, creating a heartwarming sense of community. Beecher shared that planning this impactful event took six months and involved numerous volunteers from the university and food pantry.
Past president of the UI Retiree Association, Evalyn Van Allen-Shalash, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming turnout. “This night has exceeded my expectations,” she said, visibly moved by the support. She highlighted the collaboration of various university departments, including the Graduate College and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in promoting the event.
Tavern Blue also committed to donating 10% of its evening proceeds to the Iowa City Food Pantry, amplifying the impact of the fundraiser. For those unable to attend, a QR code was made available, allowing community members to contribute directly by ordering food supplies for the pantry from Amazon.
The event has drawn attention to a critical issue that demands immediate action. Beecher’s research revealed alarming statistics that emphasize the necessity for ongoing support and solutions to combat food insecurity within the university.
While the final fundraising total is still pending, the sense of community and commitment to tackling food insecurity remains clear. This event serves as a call to action for everyone to play a role in supporting those in need.
As the evening concluded, attendees left with a sense of purpose and determination to make a difference, highlighting that together, the community can tackle even the most daunting challenges.
