Urgent Fire Warning Extended in Maryland Amid High Winds

UPDATE: Maryland officials have extended a Red Flag Fire Warning due to dangerously high winds and dry conditions. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, affects several counties including Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, and Charles, and will remain in effect until the end of Monday.

As wind gusts are forecasted to reach up to 32 mph, residents are urged to take immediate precautions to prevent wildfires. The hazardous weather conditions also extend to the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, where high winds are expected to create further fire risks.

Authorities have closed the Glen Arboretum at Towson University until 8 a.m. Tuesday, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Firefighters in Baltimore County have already contained a 22-acre brush fire in Timonium, demonstrating the critical need for vigilance across the state.

Residents are advised to properly dispose of flammable items such as cigarette butts and matches, and to avoid outdoor burning entirely. Parking vehicles on dry grass is also discouraged, as ignition risks remain high with the current dry conditions and dead foliage.

The forecast for Monday includes sunny skies and a high near 51°F, with temperatures expected to dip to 35°F overnight. A 50% chance of rain is predicted for Tuesday after 1 p.m., which may help alleviate some fire risks but will still be accompanied by gusty winds.

Looking ahead, Tuesday night is expected to bring an 80% chance of rain with a low of 41°F. While conditions remain unsettled through the week, the urgent focus remains on preventing any further fire incidents as Maryland’s weather continues to evolve.
