Urgent Officer-Involved Shooting in Troy: Suspect Critical, No Injuries

UPDATE: An urgent officer-involved shooting unfolded in downtown Troy, NY on October 14, 2023, shortly before 10 p.m.. Authorities confirm that a suspect, identified as Michael Rodriguez, 41, opened fire on two Troy patrol officers after they responded to a distress call from a woman alleging she was being threatened by him.

The female victim reported that Rodriguez possessed a handgun and had previously held it to her head during an altercation at her residence on Ferry Street. After fleeing the scene, Rodriguez was spotted by officers walking eastbound on Ferry Street towards 6th Avenue. As officers approached him to establish contact, he unexpectedly fired multiple shots at them, prompting an immediate return of fire.

According to police reports, Rodriguez then attempted to escape through a nearby parking area but collapsed, dropping both his firearm and illegal narcotics. He was later transported to a local hospital where he is now in critical condition.

Both responding officers were evaluated for injuries but thankfully emerged unscathed. Authorities emphasize the critical nature of this incident, highlighting the potential for greater harm. “It is nothing short of a miracle that no other individuals, Troy Police Officers or community members, were injured by the suspect’s deadly actions tonight,” officials stated.

The Troy Police Department, alongside specialized units and support from the New York State Police, is conducting an ongoing investigation. Chief of Police Daniel DeWolf commended the officers for their bravery and training, stating, “We are immensely proud of our department’s members and their commitment to serve our Troy community.”

He is expected to face severe charges for his actions during this latest incident. Prosecutors from the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office are actively involved in the ongoing legal proceedings.
