WAVE Project Urgently Seeks $68K to Aid Hundreds Facing Winter Homelessness

URGENT UPDATE: The WAVE Project, a nonprofit organization in Warren, Michigan, is in desperate need of $68,000 in donations to keep its winter shelter operational for the hundreds facing homelessness as temperatures drop. Since 2018, this vital service has provided a safe haven for those in need throughout the metro Detroit area, but with dwindling resources, immediate funding is critical.

“Hundreds of people in our communities, not just in Wayne County, but also Macomb County and Oakland County, are experiencing homelessness,” said Todd Gordon, co-founder and executive director of WAVE Project. “We often have a line at our door by 6 p.m. on winter nights, and we need support to continue serving these vulnerable individuals.”

Last winter alone, WAVE Project provided over 6,300 stays at their overnight shelter located at the Trinity Christian Community Center. Guests not only receive a warm place to sleep but also hot meals and vital companionship. “Many of these individuals need someone to simply sit with them, to share a meal and offer comfort,” explained Sheila Chauvin, project manager for the Macomb County Winter Shelter.

As the winter season approaches, the situation has become increasingly urgent. With some funding partners unable to contribute as before, WAVE Project’s ability to remain open is at risk. “We will be heartbroken if we can’t open our doors,” Chauvin added. The goal is to keep the shelter operational seven days a week for a total of 12 weeks starting at the end of December.

To ensure this happens, WAVE Project is calling on the community for support. “Our budget includes costs for security to keep everyone safe, along with utilities to ensure the shelter remains warm,” Gordon stated. “Without at least $41,000, we can only operate for one month.”

Every dollar counts, and donations of any amount can make a significant difference. “It is crucial for us, and for those who are unhoused, to have a safe space,” Chauvin emphasized. In addition to shelter, WAVE Project also provides mobile showers and clothing distribution to those in need.

The fundraising campaign is time-sensitive, with 23 days remaining to reach the goal of $68,000. Community members are urged to contribute whatever they can to help keep this essential service available.

As temperatures continue to drop, the need for immediate action is clear. The WAVE Project stands ready to support those in need, but they cannot do it alone. Now is the time to step up and make a difference in the lives of hundreds of individuals experiencing homelessness this winter.

For those looking to help, every contribution is vital in ensuring that the WAVE Project can continue its mission.
