UPDATE: The West Torrance girls basketball team secured a decisive 49-38 victory over Village Christian during the opening round of the Battle at the Beach tournament in Redondo Beach on Tuesday. This win sets the tone for the Warriors as they aim for a return to the CIF-SS playoffs this season.
West Torrance jumped out to an impressive 14-point lead in the first quarter, thanks to standout performances from freshman Kayla Nayak and sophomore Hailey Igbokwe, who scored 17 and 9 points, respectively. “We started out really well, especially defensively,” said West coach Keith Prendergast. “I’m proud of how we responded and got a good win.”
Nayak made her mark early, netting nine of her game-high points in the opening quarter, while Igbokwe contributed five. The Warriors continued to dominate, extending their lead to 22 points by halftime, bolstered by Nayak’s three 3-pointers.
As the game progressed, Village Christian attempted to rally, cutting the deficit to 15 points late in the third quarter. However, West Torrance regained control with Igbokwe scoring crucial baskets in the final quarter. Nayak’s reverse lay-up pushed the lead to 46-28 with just over five minutes left.
“I think we played really hard tonight, especially defensively,” Igbokwe noted, highlighting the importance of this tournament for their season preparation. Nayak echoed her teammate’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for early momentum, stating, “Doing well in this tournament will give us some momentum early in the season.”
Despite a late run from Village Christian, West’s Katie Moore hit a critical 3-pointer with 2:15 remaining, which secured a comfortable 16-point lead.
West Torrance’s victory marks a significant step in their quest for a CIF banner, as they continue pool play against Leuzinger on Wednesday. The team’s performance showcases their readiness and determination for the challenges ahead, making this tournament a pivotal moment in their season.
