Willmar’s Brynn Streff Makes History, Qualifies for State Wrestling

UPDATE: History was made as Brynn Streff, a freshman from Willmar, secured her spot in the girls’ state wrestling tournament for the first time ever, following a stunning performance at the Section 8 championships on Saturday. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone for female athletes in the region.

Streff finished as the runner-up in the 100-pound bracket, battling through intense matches to earn her state qualification. After a tough loss to Natalee Friedrichs from Sauk Centre/Melrose in the semifinal, Streff rebounded fiercely, defeating Lillian Lane of Thief River Falls to advance to the third-place match. She dominated that match, securing a 14-3 major decision over Anilyse Bundy of Brainerd.

With a true second-place match still on the line, Streff seized the opportunity, decisively beating Brooklyn Smith of Sartell with a score of 6-0. This victory propels her to the girls’ state tournament, which kicks off at 9 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2024, at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.

In another close contest, senior Maria Perez also aimed for state at the 118-pound weight class. After a challenging start, losing her opening match to Abigail Swenson of Sartell, Perez fought back valiantly. Winning her next four matches, including a decisive victory against Brooklyn Budeau, Perez faced Swenson again for true second place but fell short by criteria.

The excitement continues as other regional competitors also prepare for the state tournament. Elizabeth Rademacher from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Ava Kiecker of BOLD, and Brooklyn Binsfeld from Paynesville all secured top finishes at the Section 5 championships, advancing with impressive records. Rademacher finished 3-0 at 130 pounds, while Kiecker triumphed at 124 pounds.

The state tournament is drawing near, and fans are eager to witness these talented athletes compete at the highest level. As the anticipation builds, all eyes will be on Streff as she aims to make an even bigger impact on the state stage.
