Winter Wildlife Spectacle: Sleigh Rides with Elk Begin Dec. 5

UPDATE: Starting December 5, 2023, the Hardware Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Utah will launch an extraordinary wildlife experience featuring sleigh and wagon rides among wild elk. This seasonal event, hosted by Haviland’s Old West Adventures, runs through February 15, 2024, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, along with select dates including December 22, 23, 29, 30, and 31.

This is an urgent opportunity for nature lovers to engage with hundreds of majestic elk in their natural habitat. The rides offer not just breathtaking views but also an educational experience at the onsite Education Center. Visitors can explore the “All About Elk” exhibit to learn about the natural history of these magnificent animals, as detailed by wildlife.utah.gov.

Adding festive cheer, the center will also hold Christmas ornament-making sessions using native flora, allowing guests to create unique keepsakes representative of the WMA’s rustic charm. DWR Hardware Wildlife Education Center Director Marni Lee emphasizes that this hands-on activity enhances the winter wildlife magic.

Ticket prices are accessible: adults and children over 9 pay $12.50, children aged 4 to 8 can attend for $5, and children aged 3 and under ride for free. It’s crucial to note that tickets must be purchased in person at the Hardware Wildlife Education Center on the day of the ride.

As visitors prepare for this enchanting experience, concerns loom over a disease known as brucellosis, affecting elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area. The bacteria, Brucella abortus, can lead to significant health issues among elk populations. Wildlife managers are vigilant, implementing strategies to mitigate the risk of disease transmission, especially during peak migration periods. DWR Northern Region Wildlife Manager Jim Christensen explains that the timing of the viewing season is deliberate to ensure the health of the elk and the ecosystem.

Those eager to embark on this winter wildlife adventure can find the Hardware WMA located 16 miles east of Hyrum on State Route 101, a picturesque route through Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Nature enthusiasts are encouraged to step out of their daily routines and immerse themselves in the wild, where elk roam free and the spirit of the season thrives.

Don’t miss this rare chance to connect with nature and witness the beauty of Utah’s wildlife. For more details or to plan your visit, check the DWR website or contact the Hardware WMA directly via phone or email. The magic of winter wildlife awaits!
