The film centers on Hassan, a 55-year-old Palestinian Uber driver portrayed by Ehab Salami, who navigates the city’s bustling party scene while grappling with personal loss. His life takes an unexpected turn when he picks up Amir, a 25-year-old Israeli played by Ido Tako. Amir, on a quest for self-discovery, shares his experiences of heartbreak and identity with Hassan during their rides over a span of two years.

Inspiration Behind the Film
Machnes drew inspiration from a personal encounter during a challenging winter in Berlin, where he found himself in the car of a Palestinian Uber driver. “I felt that we understood each other somehow, better than anyone else, without saying much,” he recounted in an interview. This experience sparked the idea of a recurring connection with the driver, leading to the development of Where To?
Initially aiming to focus on characters who had moved past their traumas, Machnes realized the importance of storytelling in addressing unresolved pain. He dedicated the film to his father and to men who “simply kept driving,” emphasizing the struggle of confronting one’s history.
As the film progresses, it acknowledges the significant events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched attacks that intensified the ongoing violence in the region. Machnes chose to incorporate this historical context without allowing it to overshadow the personal narrative. “The problem was the same before, and it’s still the same problem after,” he stated.
The collaborative effort behind Where To? includes not only actors from both Israeli and Palestinian backgrounds but also a diverse production team. First-time feature director of photography Maayane Bouhnik is from Israel, while Palestinian composer Habib Hanna Shehadeh contributed to the film’s score. Machnes highlighted the film as a testament to cooperation in a climate often marked by division.
