Russian Strikes Kill Nine in Ternopil, Zelensky Calls for Aid

A recent Russian attack on the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and left dozens more injured, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The assault involved the firing of over 470 drones and 47 missiles against various targets across Ukraine, marking one of the deadliest strikes since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The attack primarily focused on residential areas, with nine-storey apartment blocks sustaining significant damage. Zelensky described the situation in Ternopil as dire, stating that there had been “significant destruction” and that individuals may be trapped under the rubble. The incident underscores the ongoing volatility in Ukraine, particularly in its western regions.

Widespread Damage and Casualties

In addition to Ternopil, the city of Kharkiv was also targeted, suffering from a massive drone assault that injured more than 30 people, including children. Online images revealed burning buildings and vehicles, highlighting the widespread devastation. The Ukrainian energy ministry reported power outages affecting multiple regions across the country as a consequence of the strikes.

The attacks extended beyond residential areas, hitting critical infrastructure in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, where two of the three injured were children. In the Lviv region, both energy facilities and civil infrastructure were damaged, with local authorities confirming that an energy facility had been struck.

Zelensky Urges International Support

While in Turkey for discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Zelensky called for increased assistance from Ukraine’s allies. He asserted, “Every brazen attack against ordinary life shows that the pressure on Russia is insufficient. Effective sanctions and assistance to Ukraine can change this.” His comments came as he sought to “intensify” peace negotiations ahead of the meeting, although the Kremlin indicated that no Russian representatives would participate.

This latest series of attacks not only devastates civilian life but also raises urgent questions about the resilience of Ukraine’s infrastructure and the international community’s response to ongoing aggression. As the situation continues to evolve, further updates will be provided.
