Search Efforts Intensify for Two Missing Near Withernsea Coast

A search operation is currently underway for two individuals believed to be missing off the coast of Withernsea in East Riding of Yorkshire. According to HM Coastguard, emergency services were alerted shortly after 15:00 on January 1, 2024, and have deployed ambulances, helicopters, and a fixed-wing aircraft to the scene. The search efforts have been hampered by “horrendous conditions,” with wave heights reported to reach as high as 9.8 feet.

As part of the ongoing operation, Humberside Police confirmed the recovery of an unconscious man from the water during initial searches. Despite the best efforts of responders, the 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have stated that the circumstances surrounding his death are not considered suspicious. Police have assured the public that searches will continue, and an increased police presence can be expected in the area.

Challenging Conditions for Rescue Teams

Darrin Stevens, a local photographer who lives just 250 meters from the coast, described the weather as “bitter and freezing.” Stevens observed emergency services operating close to the sea and expressed concern for anyone who might find themselves in the water. He noted, “The sea could have been very dangerous. The water is very bitter, and if they are in that water, they do not have long.”

The challenging weather conditions have raised alarms among safety officials. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) issued a warning about the risks associated with cold water shock, especially in conditions where sea temperatures are around 6°C to 10°C. Gareth Morrison, the RNLI’s head of water safety, stated, “We urge anyone entering the water to be aware of the dangers and to understand their own limitations.” He emphasized the importance of checking sea conditions before venturing out.

Warnings and Previous Incidents

The search operation in Withernsea follows a tragic incident earlier this year when a 51-year-old man lost his life in the sea at Brighton on New Year’s Day. Sussex Police responded to the situation after the swimmer, who was from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was recovered from the water near Brighton Palace Pier.

As the search continues, authorities remind the public to take all necessary precautions when engaging in water activities, especially during colder months. The combination of low temperatures, rough seas, and individual health factors can significantly increase risks. Emergency services are committed to locating the two missing individuals while ensuring the safety of those involved in the search operation.
