A 46-year-old man tragically died after triggering an avalanche while ski touring in the Allgäu Alps, southern Germany, on March 18, 2024. According to local police, the incident occurred on the northern flank of the Iseler Mountain during the afternoon. The skier was traveling alone and, after setting off the avalanche, managed to call for emergency assistance.
Rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to poor weather conditions and low visibility, which initially hampered a helicopter’s ability to reach the scene. A mountain rescue team was dispatched on foot but encountered unstable snow conditions, delaying access to the accident area.
Eventually, rescuers located the man in a steep snowfield below the north face of the mountain. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital while undergoing resuscitation efforts. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police confirmed that the avalanche occurred outside the secured ski area, which had not been deemed at risk. In light of the incident, authorities urged the public to heed official avalanche bulletins, carry appropriate safety equipment, and avoid steep, high-risk terrain.
