Trump Delays Ukraine Peace Deal with Surprise Truth Social Post

In a development that has taken Ukrainian officials by surprise, former President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is sending Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to meet with Ukrainian leaders, while also dispatching Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow to continue discussions on a potential peace deal. This unexpected move casts doubt on the hopes for a peace summit aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia, which has persisted for nearly three years.

The announcement came just as Andriy Yermak, chief advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was discussing a newly crafted 19-point proposal intended to end the war. Yermak had expressed optimism that this framework could be adopted as a joint plan between the United States and Ukraine, with aspirations for both leaders to sign the agreement at Mar-a-Lago during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Mixed Signals from Trump on Peace Negotiations

During the interview, Yermak conveyed his hopes for timely negotiations, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “Every day brings more Russian missile strikes and civilian casualties,” he stated, underscoring the need for immediate action. Following Trump’s post, Yermak’s demeanor shifted noticeably. He requested to reconvene in 24 hours to evaluate the implications of the new developments.

“It’s necessary to wait and to understand with which position Driscoll will come, and to talk with Witkoff to understand which position he is going with to Moscow,” Yermak said.

Trump’s post hinted at a more measured approach, stating, “I look forward to hopefully meeting with President Zelenskyy and President Putin soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages.” This statement suggests a departure from the previous urgency to conclude negotiations by Thanksgiving, potentially prolonging the conflict.

Challenges Ahead for Peace Efforts

Yermak highlighted the crucial role of the United States in leveraging pressure on Russia to agree to the proposed peace plan. He noted that while Russia has not yet committed to the 19-point proposal, the U.S. possesses significant influence, particularly through sanctions and diplomatic channels. “I am sure that the United States has a lot of possibilities to press Russia,” he stated, reiterating his belief in Trump’s unique ability to facilitate a resolution.

Although the 19-point proposal represents a step forward, it remains far from final. Yermak pointed out that several sensitive points still require direct negotiation between Trump and Zelensky, ideally in person. The urgency of the situation is palpable, as Yermak remarked, “We have no time.”

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the new dynamics introduced by Trump’s announcement will affect the ongoing peace negotiations. The stakes are high, and both Ukrainian officials and the international community are keenly watching for any signs of progress.
