U.S. Launches Civility Campaign Amid 400% Rise in In-Flight Outbursts

The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated a new campaign aimed at addressing the significant rise in disruptive behavior on airplanes. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that there has been a staggering 400% increase in in-flight outbursts since 2019. These incidents range from minor disruptions to violent confrontations, prompting the launch of the “Golden Age of Travel Starts with You” initiative.

Duffy emphasized the urgent need for improved behavior among travelers, stating, “It’s not your imagination. Traveling has become more uncivilized!” The campaign seeks to restore manners and civility in air travel, a sentiment echoed in a recent news release from the department. It highlighted that the Federal Aviation Administration has recorded a doubling of “unruly passenger events” since 2019, with approximately 13,800 incidents reported since 2021.

The statistics paint a concerning picture of air travel in recent years. Duffy noted that reports of unruly behavior surged six times between 2020 and 2021, and 2024 has already seen double the number of such events compared to 2019. Alarmingly, one in five flight attendants experienced physical incidents in the same year.

In addressing the issue, the Department of Transportation remarked, “There’s no question we’ve lost sight of what makes travel fun — the excitement, the relaxation, the cordial conversations.” The campaign aims to foster a more connected society, particularly as many Americans already feel stressed and divided.

Duffy encouraged travelers to reflect on their behavior during flights, posing several questions to inspire civility. He urged individuals to consider whether they are assisting those in need, such as pregnant women or the elderly, showing respect in their attire, managing their children, and expressing gratitude to flight attendants.

The campaign aspires to ignite a nationwide conversation about restoring courtesy and class to air travel. It is designed not only to enhance the experience for passengers but also to improve the working conditions for gate staff, flight attendants, and pilots.

In a separate announcement, Duffy praised President Donald Trump for awarding 776 air traffic controllers and technicians with $10,000 bonuses for their commitment during the government shutdown, stating, “Santa’s coming to town a little early. God bless the patriots of our skies!”

As the holiday travel season approaches, the “Golden Age of Travel Starts with You” campaign is positioned as a timely reminder of the importance of civility in the skies. The Department of Transportation’s initiative signals a proactive approach to ensuring that air travel remains enjoyable and respectful for all involved.
